2+2 = revelation

I just put together the oblique references from my Twitter and LJ and came up with a spoiler for CoE day 4 which I still haven't watched because I was at the theatre last night and it failed to record on magic telly.

So, Ianto's dead, then. It was a long time coming, given he was only supposed to be in it for a couple of episodes in the first instance. I don't know anything about the details of his demise yet and don't wish for any further spoilers. Tomorrow will be catch-up Saturday. KTHX.

However, having worked out that much, I realise it was really obvious this was going to happen.

Key indicators for me, with the benefit of hindsight, include:
  • Obsessive clinginess
  • Attempts to try and demonstrate increased closeness and relationship between him and Jack that would exaccerbate the loss [which in my opinion failed on an epic scale - Jack looked more amused than affectionate with Ianto's overtures from where I was sitting]
  • And finally, finally, epic fail at slasher movie 101:

So you're going to watch me get old and die?

If it were an episode of Star Trek, that would be the point that we would have noticed he was wearing a red shirt as he and the rest of the away team beamed down onto the hostile planet with just a tricorder...

I'm very pleased I've opted out of most of this fandom. I'm sure the flail and wank is epic out there in fandomland. I'm definitely best of out of that. Because if it goes the way I suspect it will do I don't think I could be further removed from the TW fandom hive mind on this subject.

And now I shall stop mixing my fandom metaphors and go about my day. As you were...

My response can be summed up in the following macro:

You are well away from being in the TW fandom, even if you don't feel the same way as the "hive mind". Yep, the non-ironic "get old and die" line was the kiss of death. I kept looking - "is he joking? No reference to TW staff dying young? he's serious?" oh-oh.

I went and had a look at the fandom. No thanks. I'll just be over here in my little corner and hide away from the scary, scary people.

Srsly, I've seen some messed up shit posted by people about the past five episodes of this show. I'm staying well out of it. Sometimes I wonder whether I'm cut out for fandom at all. Repeat after me: it's a TELEVISION PROGRAMME. It is not real life. Do people really, honestly take it that seriously and personally? Folks are expressing more tears, sorrow and anger over the death of a character who was, in my opinion, two dimensional at best and not really all that likeable than I have done in recent weeks about my own personal woes.

Yeah. Let's just stay in our own little nests and steer clear of the batshit insanity, hmm?

But didn't you know? TW = SRS BSNS! 4 REALS! And if you don't agree, they'll cut you!

I actually liked Ianto and enjoyed his character but I think there is a serious lack of scale in some quarters.

Perspective: they need some.
