I don't really know what kind of books I read. I don't have a type as such. If I could call to mind an author that I really like, it would be Christopher Brookmyre. His books are really funny, his only one main female character acts more like a guy than a girl [she's a police officer, goes to football matches with her brothers] and it's more about mystery or crime than anything else.
I also have a deep and abiding love for Poppy Z. Brite's earlier books and short stories. They're mostly deeply disturbing, viscerally described books about vampirism, gay sex and violence. But some of my favourite books are Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials. Again, kick-ass female protagonist who acts more like a boy, darkness, and no shying away from the inevitable upsetting realities of life.
So, I read a lot of books about dark themes, unpleasantness and violence...
