As I mentioned yesterday, I went to see The Boat That Rocked last night. I really enjoyed it.

I can see why some people got upset about it. It doesn't really portray women in a particularly good light and seems to mostly portray them, to quote Richard Herring, as duplicitous whores. The main protagonist's date drops him in the thirty seconds it takes him to secure a condom and is already in bed with Nick Frost by the time he gets back [though he later forgives her. And him. Without so much as a word] and Chris O'Dowd's new wife leaves him after 17 hours because she only married him in order to stay on board the boat to shag Rhys Ifans. So yeah, the women don't come over well in the movie.

If I was going to be picky, I'd say that there's a lot of things that happen from a relationships point of view that don't ring true. Misdemeanours of an epic nature are forgiven in the change of a scene. But I'm not going to be picky, because it was a good fun romp, with some really amusing moments. And oh, the pretty. Soooooo much pretty. I am in love with Chris O'Dowd all over again after watching him crying his eyes out over his lost love whilst a song is playing during his show then doing a really chirpy link only to watch his face fall again when the next song comes on. He broke my heart, and mended it again with his innocence.

And as for the other pretty, there was a whole range...

Philip Seymour Hoffman. Yes, really. I think he's lovely in this

A Rhys Ifans/Bill Nighy double-header. Bill is very "Cameron" in the film, and his "sticking it to the man and standing by his team" act has the same effect on me as in State of Play, namely a burning itch in my abdomen that turns into an outburst of squeeeeee that I can't control...

Okay, okay, I know that isn't from the film. And he's sooooo young. But he reminds me so very much of a young Tim Wheeler from Ash that it makes me all girlie like I was in the days that "Kung Fu" was in the charts and I was all young, free and single.

And Chris was totally my favourite in the film. He is just. So. Cute in it. I want to snuggle him and make him all better when he's worried that he's blown it with the missus because he, ahem, "blew it" in just a couple of minutes, then goes back and she tells him she's leaving. He's lovely. Lovely lovely lovely. :D

On a totally unrelated issue, I wanted to post a video for an actor that I'm very excited about. I'd say that some of you might recognise him from the small part he took in Being Human, or as the uniformed police officer from Saturday's Planet Of The Dead, but I doubt it. He's such an amazingly versatile performer, even though I've watched this video about 20 times now I still can't believe it's all just one man. My acting teacher from the course I did in February showed us this video as an example of an exemplary showreel, and we were all just blown away. But enough of my preamble. Watch Glenn Doherty instead...
