I've seen a lot of movies this month, what with having gotten my cinema Unlimited card and all, so after my trip to see District 9 last night [which is superb, by the way], I thought it was time for an aide memoire for me and a ten word review of each one.

District 9 - Intelligent sci-fi at its best. Apartheid metaphor somewhat tired.
The Final Destination 3D - Predictable plot, fantastic romp. Cartoonish violence and gore was fun!
The Hurt Locker - Pedestrian, overrated. Poor characterisation. Couldn't have cared less about them.
Inglourious Basterds - Tarantino at his best. Tongue in cheek. Delightfully over the top.
Orphan - Watch these kids' careers. Stellar performances. Very tense.
A Perfect Getaway - Started slow, got much better. Learn to trust your instincts.
The Proposal - Sandra Bullock's great. Likeable froth. Don't get Ryan Reynolds' appeal.
The Ugly Truth - Made me laugh harder than expected. Proper predictable cheesy romcom.

In my future, I see trips to watch the following movies:

Dorian Grey
Toy Story 3D, on limited release
Gamer
Law Abiding Citizen - yes, I do seem to be on a Gerard Butler tip. No, I'm not doing it deliberately.
Mesrine pt. 1 & 2
Zombieland

There are probably others that I can't think of right now.

Also, is anyone else as unfeasibly excited as I am about Flash Forward coming on TV? I squeaked very loudly when I noticed John Cho in the very slick, very movie-style full-length trailer they've been showing on Channel 5.

I have a conundrum! I want to go see Dorian Grey and Sherlock Holmes but I can't get the Male to agree to both.

WHAT DO I DO??

Also could I suggest Surrogates with Bruce Willis? I've seen cinema trailers for that and it looks gooooood. I do not give a single shit about Avatar but I would totally go and see Surrogates.

What is this Flash Forward thing?? I can has linkage??

Dorian Grey looks amazing, but I understand that Sherlock Holmes has been deliberately slashed by the writers, with much of the subtext of the Watson/Holmes relationship made almost text. I personally loved A Picture of Dorian Grey, so that one somehow appeals to me more. I don't really understand why since I normally avoid movies of books I've enjoyed like the plague.

I'm not sure about Surrogates. It does look kinda interesting, but the trailer didn't grip me all that hard. I might go see it, though. It's the kind of boy-friendly film I might be able to lure Mr G, [livejournal.com profile] after8mink or Rich to come see with me.

As for Flash Forward, have a looky at this.

I've not been so excited about something coming on TV since the first season of Heroes or possibly Dexter, and Mr G is similarly excited. That makes it even greater, because it's been ages since we've shared a televisual obsession...

I agree with you about District 9, Inglouroious Basterds and Final Destination 3D. They were all a blast! I laughed myself silly at Final Destination, and IB was brilliant. I could watch that smoke-face image all day.

I'm so glad someone else thought that. I got goosebumps watching it. Mr G thought it was a good effect, but I totally saw it as the ghost of Shosanna watching the destruction. I thought it was wonderful use of symbology.

Final Destination 3D was my first ever 3D movie. I'm totally sold on it. Even though I kept going cross-eyed!

Goosebumps, yes, exactly! My sister called that whole ending a kind of catharsis that movies were made for. I read in Entertainment Weekly that the shade of lipstick that the film actress character was wearing was called "Russian Red" and it made me marvel at just how much of the movie was symbolic.

Oh, so you missed My Bloody Valentine 3D? That was my first one. Both movies were a blast, really. They were the kind of horror movie I like - old-school fun slasher flicks.

He's a bit clever, that Tarantino, isn't he?

I've been getting more into horror movies lately. I've watched quite a few Japanese ones, most recent being One Missed Call. Apparently the US remake sucked most exceedingly, but the original was very good.

I have this need to fly over there and go see movies with my fandom wife! ARGH! I miss going all the time, pre-Peter we went once, sometimes even twice a week. Now we still go a lot, but not as often as I would like given that now it requires a babysitter or a kids movie. That being said, we do take Peter a lot, he is so excited to see Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs! Though I think his nana will take him to that because she bought him the book as well...

Toy Story 3 is so in my future, and it would be even without Peter, though the first two are on his list of all time faves and my goodness I have seen them each about three hundred times by now. I love the plot line of a toy recall, LOL!

I am pretty excited about Dorian Grey, Sherlock Holmes, Shutter Island, Jennifer's Body, Wolfman, Where the Wild Things Are, Nine, Avatar...

Please?! Please come! I would LOVE that so much. Bring Nick and Peter and we'll send them and Mr G off to do boy things and we can go to the movies and giggle in the back row! *sighs at happy fantasies of time spent together*

I don't know how I forgot to mention Where The Wild Things Are, but I watched that trailer and it left me with a big goofy grin on my face and a tear in the corner of my eye. I'm quite keen on Sherlock Holmes too, especially since I hear it's been given a thorough workover to bring the subtext right to the surface. That, plus the fact I think RDJ is legendary.

Not so bothered about Avatar, although I saw the trailer in 3D when we went to see Final Destination and the effects are pretty good. Not heard of any of the others, so I'll look them up.

I LOVED District 9. Wouldn't mind seeing Inglourious Basterds, Don't think I care about any of the others. Dorian Grey looks interesting. Was Zombieland the one with (mind not providing name of actor) - tongue in cheek, just fighting zombies? (saw preview) don't think I'll see that one.

Zombieland is Woody Harrelson in full-on redneck killer mode. Having just seen Natural Born Killers again for the first time in ages, seeing him do a similar character with more humour and less darkness appeals to me. I also love a good monster movie, though I am slightly concerned with the new-found desire to have zombies that run. They were never meant to run. Simon Pegg wrote an article in the Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/nov/04/television-simon-pegg-dead-set) about running zombies after the showing on TV over here of a series called Dead Set which, whilst it was fantastic, subversive take on the whole cult of celebrity and reality TV thing, stuck in my craw a little because I agree with Mr Pegg on his views about the symbolism of zombies as a metaphor for shuffling, inevitable mortality.

To be fair, I agree with Simon Pegg on most things, especially when he comes over all film studies on our asses. The man is just brilliant.

Definitely going to see Dorien Grey, though. It looks beautiful, and I'm actually surprised no-one made it into a movie before.
